Stein, Riesling Kabinett Trocken Alfer Holle 1900, 2021

The "1900" in the name is literal: just over a thousand ungrafted Riesling vines planted in the year 1900, on a tiny terraced parcel called the Kleine Hölle that is the second-oldest producing Riesling vineyard in the Mosel and among the oldest vine plantings anywhere in Germany. Ulli Stein leased the plot in 2011 and tends it like a garden — which, at that age and on that gradient, is the only way it can be tended. The wine ferments in neutral barrel and is left to find its own balance, and in 2021 it landed as a Kabinett Trocken rather than the Spätlese this cuvée usually becomes: lower in weight, drier, more nervous, which is precisely the register Stein prefers anyway (he values cut over size and has rarely bothered with Auslese). This is also one of the most exotic, perfumed wines in the Mosel, so give it air — decant it, or open the bottle a few hours ahead. Old vines, a bone-dry frame and that kind of aromatic lift do not often show up in the same glass.

More about Stein

Ulli Stein is a rebel who spent eight years fighting German wine law to revive the traditional straw wine style. His Mosel Rieslings come from ancient ungrafted vines on impossible slopes, made dry and with laser-focused precision. This is winemaking as defiance.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Trout with brown butter and almonds, Dungeness crab salad, pork schnitzel with lemon, Thai green papaya salad, roast chicken with herbs, or aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Dry and light-bodied, with an explosively aromatic nose of crushed flowers and slate. Layered stone fruit — apricot and quince — over a stony, savory core, with high, driving acidity and a long mineral finish. Tastes drier and more taut than its perfume suggests.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
