What is this wine?
Stratum Wines is the project of Curro Bareño and Jesús Olivares, two of Spain’s most exciting young winemakers, who have built their reputation on reviving forgotten vineyards and working with minimal intervention. Matas Altas is made from old-vine Monastrell (Mourvèdre) grown at high altitude in the Almansa region of southeastern Spain, where limestone soils and cooler nights bring freshness to this traditionally bold grape.

Why get this wine?
Monastrell is often associated with heavy, rustic wines, but Stratum shows a different side: lifted, juicy, and elegant. Their approach—organic farming, gentle extraction, and low-intervention cellar work—delivers a wine with both character and drinkability. It’s an artisanal take on one of Spain’s signature grapes, offering authenticity and exceptional value.

What does this wine taste like?
Medium-bodied and vibrant, with flavors of red and black cherry, blackberry, and plum, accented by wild herbs, pepper, and a chalky mineral edge. Tannins are fine and ripe, giving structure without heaviness.

When should you drink this wine?
Best 2024–2028. Great with grilled meats, sausages, hearty stews, or roasted vegetables. A versatile weeknight red that also shines with rustic Mediterranean fare.

"The village red 2023 Matas Altas comes from different old vineyards, the youngest from 1967, all ungrafted and dry farmed, in their village Fuente-Álamo, planted with field blends, mostly Monastrell but with other varieties on limestone soils with different textured, marl, sand and gravel. It fermented with some 15% to 20% full clusters and indigenous yeasts It has a perfumed nose, floral and elegant, juicy and with a very elegant mouthfeel and very fine tannins, clean and precise, with chalky sensations and the red berries, Mediterranean herbs and orange peel freshness. It has contained ripeness and 14% alcohol, but they harvest with ripeness, quite late. The wine has great balance, and the alcohol goes unnoticed. It matured for 12 months in two 5,000-liter oak foudres and some 500-liter barrels. They produced 16,000 bottles. It was bottled in September 2024, and it's approachable and expressive." -Luis Gutiérrez
