What is this wine?
Stratum Wines is the project of Curro Bareño and Jesús Olivares, two of Spain’s most exciting young winemakers, who have built their reputation on reviving forgotten vineyards and working with minimal intervention. Matas Altas is made from old-vine Monastrell (Mourvèdre) grown at high altitude in the Almansa region of southeastern Spain, where limestone soils and cooler nights bring freshness to this traditionally bold grape.
Why get this wine?
Monastrell is often associated with heavy, rustic wines, but Stratum shows a different side: lifted, juicy, and elegant. Their approach—organic farming, gentle extraction, and low-intervention cellar work—delivers a wine with both character and drinkability. It’s an artisanal take on one of Spain’s signature grapes, offering authenticity and exceptional value.
What does this wine taste like?
Medium-bodied and vibrant, with flavors of red and black cherry, blackberry, and plum, accented by wild herbs, pepper, and a chalky mineral edge. Tannins are fine and ripe, giving structure without heaviness.
When should you drink this wine?
Best 2024–2028. Great with grilled meats, sausages, hearty stews, or roasted vegetables. A versatile weeknight red that also shines with rustic Mediterranean fare.
