At 900 to 1,000 meters, Guardiola is the highest vineyard Terre Nere farms and among the highest red-wine vineyards in Europe — high enough that every task is done by hand and the terraces get narrower as the slope steepens. The soil is as lean as the air: loose sand and basaltic gravel that holds almost no water, which is why the wine comes out so severe and so mineral. The vines run 90 to 120 years old across a single hectare in Castiglione di Sicilia, yielding roughly 3,500 bottles. Winemaking is the house method — fermented in tank and barrel, 14 months in French barriques and tonneaux, a month back in steel, bottled unfined and unfiltered. This is the cru that asks for patience: young Guardiola is austere and tightly wound, and 2024's slow, healthy ripening has given it the fruit to reward a decade in the cellar.
