Thierry Allemand didn't inherit Cornas — he rebuilt it, buying up scraps of abandoned terrace in the 1980s and restacking the granite walls by hand while the appellation was still an afterthought. Reynard is the summit of that work: a steep, southeast-facing granite cru planted to ancient Syrah, some of it well over a century old, farmed with an obsessiveness that borders on the monastic. The winemaking is famously plain — 100% Syrah, whole clusters, native yeasts, old wood, and about as little sulfur as anyone dares — and the results age like almost nothing else in the northern Rhône. The 2020 is Reynard in a warm, generous key: dark, fleshy and deeply perfumed, but with the iron-and-granite spine that keeps Allemand's Syrah taut no matter the year. Violets, black olive, cracked pepper and cured meat sit over deep black fruit, the tannins fine-grained but entirely serious, the finish enormous. Give it a long decant if you're opening one now; it will reward another decade in the cellar. The label on this bottle is lightly marked — a cosmetic matter only, and the wine inside is untouched.

"The 2020 Cornas Reynard is spectacular. Loaded with pristine graphite, cassis pastilles, crushed rocks and black plum notes, it also boasts fleshy layers and stemmy gradations. Framed by polished tannins, the 2020 is an authoritarian, cinemascope-sized Cornas standing alone at the very top of the appellation’s quality hierarchy. Kept in check by stunning freshness, the concentrated 2020 terminates with persistence and style on the layered, savory finish. This is brilliance in the glass." —Nicolas Greinacher

More about Thierry Allemand

Thierry Allemand didn't just revive Cornas—he redefined it. Learning under Joseph Michel and Noël Verset in the early 1980s, he proved that this austere appellation could produce balanced, elegant, age-worthy reds without heavy tannin and new oak as crutches. Only 500 cases each of Chaillot and Reynard, five hectares total, organic farming, minimal sulfur: Allemand is one of the closest things the Northern Rhône has to a cult figure, and he earned it.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Decant an hour, then pour it with something serious: roast leg of lamb with herbs, a grilled ribeye, venison with juniper, duck with olives, oxtail braised in red wine, or a wedge of Saint-Nectaire to finish.

Tasting Profile

Violets, black olive, cracked black pepper and cured meat over deep, dark fruit, with a smoky, iron-like granite note running underneath. Full-bodied and dense but never heavy, with bright acidity and fine-grained, serious tannins. Dry, savory and very long — young now, and built to age.
