Vietti's Castiglione is the estate's classic Barolo — not a single cru but an assembly of small parcels scattered across several of the zone's villages, and the backbone always comes from Ravera in Novello. That's the trick here: this is one of the smartest ways into serious Barolo. Each component is fermented separately and only assembled just before bottling, with malolactic in wood and around thirty months in large barrels plus a touch of barrique. The vines run from 10 to 45 years old, Guyot-trained, and the whole thing is 100% Nebbiolo. 2016 is a vintage Barolo lovers have been chasing since release, and the 375ml format is the honest answer to a wine this structured on a weeknight — one serious glass each, no half-finished bottle on the counter.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Barolo Castiglione is a dazzling wine that will show readers just how compelling this vintage is, even among entry-level wines from top producers. Rich, ample and explosive, the 2016 possesses tremendous richness and resonance from the very first taste. Bright red cherry and red plum fruit, wild flowers, mint, blood orange and spice build as this sumptuous, dramatic Barolo shows all it's got. As always, the Castiglione is built on a core of fruit from Ravera. In 2016, the Castiglione benefits from the inclusion of several new sites, including Ginestra, Mosconi, Bricco Ravera (in Monforte), Le Coste, Costabelle, Meriame, Briccolina and Codana. All I can say is: What a wine!" —Antonio Galloni

"The Vietti 2016 Barolo Castiglione opens to a grounded and authentic profile with hints of mint, balsam herb and tilled earth. The primary fruit is neatly folded into all those other components, and all received equal billing when the final results are counted. The entry-level Castiglione is always the most accessible of Vietti's Baroli, but this vintage shows a heightened level of intensity, complexity and freshness. Those silky tannins are followed by beautiful menthol brightness. This is a real charmer." —Monica Larner

"Appealing aromas and flavors of rose, black currant, cherry, earth and tobacco mark this harmonious red, which is beautifully balanced and lingers with accents of fruit, earth and tobacco."

More about Vietti

One of the great names from Barolo, Vietti has been a pioneering force in Piedmont for decades, going back to the 1961 Rocche, one of the first single-vineyard designated bottles ever. The Rocche, and other single Cru wines from outside Castiglione, are among the most sought-after Barolo being made today.

Vietti also makes a Barolo normale called Castiglione, which confusingly is made mostly with fruit from Ravera, in the village of Novello, rather than Castiglione. It’s a good wine to stock up on just about every vintage. The style at Vietti is neither particularly traditional or particularly modern: a down-the-middle approach that is focused primarily on quality and terroir expression.
