Nevtelen means "nameless" in Hungarian — a wry title for a Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown on an extinct volcano in a corner of Hungary everyone knows for white wine. Villa Tolnay farms at the foot of Csobanc hill on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, where Swiss owner Philipp Oser took over in 2004 and named the estate for the Hungarian film actress Klari Tolnay, who had owned the villa before him. The three-hectare parcel behind this bottling is intensely rocky: basalt, clay and sand mixed with sediment left by the prehistoric Pannonian sea, and that volcanic rock is what makes it taste like nowhere in Bordeaux. Organically farmed, fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in steel and ceramic, aged ten months in large oval casks and French barrels, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. It is a fifty-fifty blend, medium-weight rather than blockbuster, and it makes a convincing case that Hungary's next export won't only be white.
