Francois Villard was the original somm project, cooking and serving wine in restaurants before setting up near Condrieu in the early 1990s and becoming a Northern Rhone reference for purity and place. Le Brocarde is one of his top single-vineyard Cote-Rotie bottlings, from a steep, south-facing parcel near Ampuis on the famed slopes above the Rhone. It is Syrah co-fermented with a touch of Viognier and partly whole-cluster, the more aromatic and floral of his Cote-Roties, made in tiny quantities (around 1,200 bottles a year). The 2007 is now mature, so its tannins have softened and it has developed the savory, gamey complexity that comes with age. Decant it and drink soon.
