La Romanée is the vineyard right outside the Dancer cellar door, and of its five owners the Dancers hold the oldest piece — two plots, one high on the slope and one low, on clay and limestone, with the original vines going back to 1978. It's also the first parcel they pick every year, which tells you something about the style: this is Chassagne built on tension rather than richness, taut and muscular but never heavy. Vincent Dancer came from Alsace in 1996 to reclaim family vines that had been rented out, farmed them into the first certified organic estate in Chassagne-Montrachet, and earned a reputation as a perfectionist; son Théo worked alongside him from 2016 and took over fully in 2021. The house method is unfussy and hands-off — the grapes are pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and malolactic is left to happen on its own before the wine goes to barrel. With barely six hectares to work from, nothing here is made in quantity, and a Premier Cru this close to home is one of the bottles Burgundy obsessives chase hardest.

"Aromas of waxy citrus rind, pear, white flower and nutmeg introduce the 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping wine that's unctuous and textural, with lively acids and an expansive finish." —William Kelley

More about Vincent Dancer

Vincent Dancer is a top winemaker in Chassagne-Montrachet. His family name is a great description of his wines. They are muscular, taught and sometimes downright powerful. But they are also precise, elegant and beautifully poised. Effortlessly balanced.

Less than a decade ago Dancer's wines were first brought to the U.S. and those of us lucky enough to try them then were immediately impressed. This wasn't wine with potential, it was wine of intrinsic greatness.

In 1996 Vincent moved from his childhood home in Alsace to take over some family vineyards. The first thing he focused on was farming, becoming the first certified organic producer in Chassagne-Montrachet. His attention to detail in the vineyards has brought on a label of "perfectionist."

In the cellar he is deliberate and, of course, does everything with a goal of exquisite balance. His holdings are small so the wines were always quite limited. But given their growing popularity and recent low yields, they have become downright scarce.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with lemon and thyme, seared scallops with brown butter, halibut in beurre blanc, Comté and aged Gruyère, or a creamy risotto with wild mushrooms.

Tasting Profile

Dry white with aromas of citrus, orchard fruit and white flowers, with a light toasty, nutty note from barrel. Medium-bodied and firm rather than plush, with bright acidity running straight down the middle and a chalky, mineral finish that lingers.
