La Romanée is the vineyard right outside the Dancer cellar door, and of its five owners the Dancers hold the oldest piece — two plots, one high on the slope and one low, on clay and limestone, with the original vines going back to 1978. It's also the first parcel they pick every year, which tells you something about the style: this is Chassagne built on tension rather than richness, taut and muscular but never heavy. Vincent Dancer came from Alsace in 1996 to reclaim family vines that had been rented out, farmed them into the first certified organic estate in Chassagne-Montrachet, and earned a reputation as a perfectionist; son Théo worked alongside him from 2016 and took over fully in 2021. The house method is unfussy and hands-off — the grapes are pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and malolactic is left to happen on its own before the wine goes to barrel. With barely six hectares to work from, nothing here is made in quantity, and a Premier Cru this close to home is one of the bottles Burgundy obsessives chase hardest.
