Not a Sancerre, and that's exactly the point. The vineyard behind Gaudry'Olle sits on a hilltop plateau in Crezancy-en-Sancerre just outside the appellation boundary, so the wine goes out as a Val de Loire IGP — same grower, same clay-limestone, same Sauvignon Blanc, no appellation on the label. The vines are young, propagated from Vincent Gaudry's own older estate parcels, and the high, cool site delays ripening enough to keep a real bite of acidity in the fruit. Gaudry took over the family domaine in Sury-en-Vaux at eighteen in 1993, converted to organics almost immediately, and in 2004 became the first grower in Sancerre certified biodynamic by Demeter; the cellar work here is the same hands-off routine, native yeasts and minimal handling, with seven months in stainless steel and two rackings instead of the oak vats his Sancerres get. Think of this as the immediate, thirst-quenching version of the house style — and quietly better than plenty of bottles that do get to say Sancerre on the front.

Tasting Profile

Citrus and white flowers with a stony, chalky edge, restrained at first and more open with air. Light- to medium-bodied and dry, with a faintly creamy texture and crisp, mouthwatering acidity. Clean, brisk finish.
