Sancerre has three soils, and this is the rare bottle that puts all three in one glass. Le Tournebride revives the way the Paris trade once sold Sancerre by the barrel, blending the three terroirs in roughly equal parts to make a wine that was complete on its own: fast-draining Oxfordian caillottes from Verdigny, Kimmeridgian terres blanches from Gaudry's home village of Sury-en-Vaux, and flint-studded silex from Saint-Satur. Vincent Gaudry took over the family domaine at eighteen in 1993, went organic almost at once, and in 2004 became the first grower in Sancerre certified biodynamic by Demeter — and he applies the same regime to this bottling as to the top cuvees: native yeasts, no batonnage, minimal sulfur, no fining or filtration. The vines average around forty years old, which keeps this the most immediately open and generous of his Sancerres. It's the bistro bottle of a very serious grower, and the best introduction to what he does.
