Vollenweider, Riesling Trocken Goldgrube, 2023

This is the last Goldgrube dry Riesling bottled as a single wine — from 2024 on, the estate splits the site into separate parcel bottlings, so 2023 is the whole site in one glass. It comes off 120-year-old vines still trained on single stakes on the steep slate of the Wolfer Goldgrube, hand-harvested (there is no other option on ground this steep) and fermented with native yeasts. 2023 was a breakthrough year for dry Riesling in the Mosel: warm enough to ripen properly in a famously cool place, with the whole trick being to stop short of overripeness — and the dry wines here came out etched, saline and linear rather than heavy. What makes it worth the money is that the power never turns into weight; it's structured and serious and still genuinely easy to drink. Bone dry, as Trocken promises — fermented out, no perceptible sweetness. The estate farms roughly five hectares of unconsolidated, largely own-rooted old-vine parcels around Traben-Trarbach, 90% of it inside this one vineyard, all certified organic.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Trout with brown butter and almonds, roast chicken with herbs, pork schnitzel and lemon, crab cakes, sushi and sashimi, or a plate of aged Gouda and cured ham.

Tasting Profile

Bone dry and medium-bodied. White flowers and citrus on the nose with a smoky, herbal edge. The palate is linear and salty rather than fruity, with high, clean acidity and a stony grip from the slate. Powerful but not heavy, finishing long and mineral.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
