The oldest of the British Port houses, founded in 1670 and in continuous operation ever since. 1963 was declared across the board and stands as the benchmark vintage of the post-war era, a year of power, dimension and real character whose wines have consistently aged more slowly than anyone expected. At 63 years this Warre's is fully mature: tannins resolved, the fruit turned from fresh berry to dried fig and cherry, the sweetness reading now as toffee, chocolate and warm spice. Bottles this old are always a question of how they were stored, but a well-kept one is drinking beautifully and in no hurry. Stand it upright for a day, decant carefully off a heavy crust, and serve it cool rather than cold.
