"Made for the first time the 2018 Enkircher Ellergrub Réserve was sourced from a single, wide-open terrace on the bottom of the cru that normally would have guaranteed perfect botrytis but not so in 2018, when there was no botrytis at all. So, originally planned to become an Auslese but then picked a week later than the regular grand cru "GE," the wine ended as Réserve that aged for 22 to 23 months in small oak barrels before the bottling in August this year. The Reserve is deep, pure and elegant on the intense, perfectly ripe and concentrated nose, which is gorgeous in its mix of very fine slate and ripe mirabelle aromas. Round, refined and very elegant on the palate, this is a dense, round and juicy yet crystalline, fine and salty Ellergrub that develops enormous intensity and complex length with perfectly interwoven phenols (24 hours of maceration). This is an impressive dry Riesling with 13% alcohol that doesn't weight heavy but gives a full-bodied, very intense and sustainable wine of great class. This outstanding Ellergrub will not be for sale before May 2021. Tasted at the domain in September 2020." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Weiser-Kunstler

The wines made by married couple Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler are like nothing else coming out of the Mosel. They have beautiful, delineated, and almost crystalline structures, minerality to spare, and dazzling fruit purity.

These are cerebral, thought-provoking wines that benefit from cellaring. They’re racy and super-fresh, vibrating with Riesling tension. I probably wouldn’t offer a bottle of Weiser-Künstler to a Mosel newbie, someone looking for plush stone fruit and a hefty dose of sugar. These are wines for wine lovers, patient drinkers, and anyone interested in what old vines from one of the world’s most difficult terrains can yield.

Rare for the region, Weiser-Künstler is certified organic. They employ no mechanization in the vines, nor could they, if they wanted. The slopes are simply too steep and unforgiving. Konstantin and Alexandra may not have vines in the most famous vineyards, but they’ve worked tirelessly to highlight this unassuming yet truly great terroir. Ellergrub, Gaispfad and Steffensberg are home to old (80-100 years of age), ungrafted vines; the wines coming from these sites are truly special.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
