Weiser-Kunstler, Riesling Ellergrub Spatlese, 2025

Call it an Auslese in all but name: the 2025 Ellergrub Spätlese is rich and sweet, with enough acidity to keep it fresh. Weiser-Künstler made it from slightly botrytized fruit, picked from mostly ungrafted vines that are still trained on single poles, and they made only a tiny amount. Enkircher Ellergrub is one of the couple's historic Große Lagen (great sites). It has been among the Mosel's highest-rated vineyards for centuries and was marked Grand Cru on the 1897 map of the region. Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler farm organically on slopes too steep for machines. Most of their vines are ungrafted and about a hundred years old or more, so yields are minuscule. 2025 was their 20th anniversary vintage, and the Prädikat wines were the highlight of the year, including four separate Auslesen. They're known as masters of Kabinett, but you can taste their love for Spätlese in this one, and for a wine this rare and this hard to farm, the price is remarkably fair.

Robert Parker

"The 2025 Enkircher Ellergrub Spätlese is still reductive on the pure, slaty and even iodine-scented nose that is spiced with milled blue slate and voluptuous, ripe and lush yellow fruit. Fine, savory and enormously saline on the palate, this is a mouthwatering, filigreed and savory, crisp and weightless Spätlese and a Mosel classic that can be aged for 30+ years. Tasted as a sample in March 2026." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Weiser-Kunstler

The wines made by married couple Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler are like nothing else coming out of the Mosel. They have beautiful, delineated, and almost crystalline structures, minerality to spare, and dazzling fruit purity.

These are cerebral, thought-provoking wines that benefit from cellaring. They’re racy and super-fresh, vibrating with Riesling tension. I probably wouldn’t offer a bottle of Weiser-Künstler to a Mosel newbie, someone looking for plush stone fruit and a hefty dose of sugar. These are wines for wine lovers, patient drinkers, and anyone interested in what old vines from one of the world’s most difficult terrains can yield.

Rare for the region, Weiser-Künstler is certified organic. They employ no mechanization in the vines, nor could they, if they wanted. The slopes are simply too steep and unforgiving. Konstantin and Alexandra may not have vines in the most famous vineyards, but they’ve worked tirelessly to highlight this unassuming yet truly great terroir. Ellergrub, Gaispfad and Steffensberg are home to old (80-100 years of age), ungrafted vines; the wines coming from these sites are truly special.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Seared foie gras with roasted apples; Roquefort or Stilton with walnuts; spicy Thai larb or red curry with duck; roast pork belly with apple compote; apricot or tarte Tatin for dessert.

Tasting Profile

Sweet and rich, closer to an Auslese than a typical Spätlese, with a touch of botrytis from the slightly botrytized fruit. Enough acidity runs through it to keep it fresh rather than heavy.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
