Weiser-Kunstler, Riesling Trabener Gaispfad, 2019

A fully dry Kabinett Trocken from one of the Mosel's historic grand cru slopes, now with six years of bottle age behind it. The Trabener Gaispfad is one of only two Weiser-Künstler sites never touched by Flurbereinigung, the post-war land re-parcelling that flattened and replanted so much of the river's steepest terrain — planted with own-rooted vines, over 70 years old. Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler farm it organically and entirely by hand, because on slopes this severe there is no other option. The dry Gaispfad is the cerebral end of their range: very little easy fruit, plenty of stone and smoke, and the kind of chiseled acidity that only sharpens with time in bottle. Remarkably fairly priced for what is among the most difficult farming in the wine world, and a mature Mosel dry Riesling is one of the great underrated pleasures in white wine.

"The 2019 Trabener Gaispfad is a picture-book representative of the vintage since it combines a coolish, refreshing flinty and phenolic character with clear, perfectly ripe, intense and elegant fruit. Whole-bunch pressed, this is a rich, concentrated, very dense and juicy yet elegant Riesling with crystalline, salty acidity and mineral drive that carries the full-bodied yet crystalline Gaispfad into a long and intense, very aromatic and crunchy finish that is till a bit astringent. This is an impressive wine with grip and edges. Tasted at the domain in September 2020." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Weiser-Kunstler

The wines made by married couple Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler are like nothing else coming out of the Mosel. They have beautiful, delineated, and almost crystalline structures, minerality to spare, and dazzling fruit purity.

These are cerebral, thought-provoking wines that benefit from cellaring. They’re racy and super-fresh, vibrating with Riesling tension. I probably wouldn’t offer a bottle of Weiser-Künstler to a Mosel newbie, someone looking for plush stone fruit and a hefty dose of sugar. These are wines for wine lovers, patient drinkers, and anyone interested in what old vines from one of the world’s most difficult terrains can yield.

Rare for the region, Weiser-Künstler is certified organic. They employ no mechanization in the vines, nor could they, if they wanted. The slopes are simply too steep and unforgiving. Konstantin and Alexandra may not have vines in the most famous vineyards, but they’ve worked tirelessly to highlight this unassuming yet truly great terroir. Ellergrub, Gaispfad and Steffensberg are home to old (80-100 years of age), ungrafted vines; the wines coming from these sites are truly special.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with herbs, trout with brown butter and hazelnuts, pork schnitzel with lemon, smoked eel or mackerel, Alsatian onion tart, aged Comté, or a dish of white asparagus with hollandaise.

Tasting Profile

Aromas of wet stone, smoke, spice and fresh herbs alongside yellow fruit, grapefruit and a touch of hazelnut and lavender. Fruit takes a back seat to minerality; the acidity is bright and cutting, and the finish is long, savory and stony rather than sweet.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
