A Limited Release of Piedmont Rising Star Trediberri's 2021 Barolo

Trediberri, founded only in 2007, is one of the newest producers in the entire Barolo DOC. Yet their wines taste so utterly classical and traditional that you would never guess. The wines feel like they've been around for generations.
The explanation is Federico Oberto, one of the three founding partners and the father of Nicolas, another of the founders and the man who mostly runs the show today with his wife Stefania. Federico Oberto worked for Renato Ratti from 1970 until 2005. Renato Ratti was one of the great historical figures of Piedmont wine, a true repository of Barolo wisdom and tradition. Ratti was Federico's mentor up until Ratti's untimely death in 1988. When you taste Trediberri's wines, you sense that somehow that generations-old wisdom made it into the bottle that you are drinking.
You can also taste the terroir. Trediberri specializes in La Morra, the village known for producing Barolo's most elegant and aromatic wines. Indeed, the Obertos like to compare their wines to Chambolle Musigny, and you get it right away from your first pour: a burst of that magic red fruit/floral combination wafting upwards from the glass. Then you drink the wine and you encounter the crunch of serious Barolo: nervy wild fruit, a touch of licorice, a long mineral finish.
Today we are offering our allocation of their single vineyard “Berri”, which they have bottled only since 2019 (before that it went into a village blend that they no longer produce). Berri is a little-known site on the western side of La Morra with some alluvial influences thanks to its proximity to the Tamaro river. This, together with the coolness of the site and a white-colored limestone, contribute to a Barolo that is quite fresh. Some have compared the terroir to Monvigliero’s in Verduno. As Galloni puts it in his note below, the Obertos are slowly putting this terroir on the map!
These wines are popular and our allocation each year always sells out fast. This year we have the highly praised 2021 vintage, and it will sell out even faster.
Trediberri, Barolo Berri, 2021 $65.99
"Nicola and Stefania Oberto are slowly putting Berri on the map. Silky, aromatic and creamy on the palate, the 2021 Barolo Berri is striking in its beauty. Crushed flowers, sweet red-toned fruit, chalk, mint and white pepper all meld together effortlessly. Silky, polished tannins frame the finish. The 2021 doesn't have the immediacy of the 2020, but it may catch up to it one day because of its energy. It is a superb young Barolo—that much is clear. About 30% of wine saw submerged cap maceration. Time in cask was 25 months." Antonio Galloni, Vinous
