A Very Special Spätburgunder: Wasenhaus' In-Demand Pinot Noir
Wasenhaus is, without doubt, one of the most talked about wine estates in Germany, if not the world.
Over the last few years, their showstopping collection of Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Chardonnay have created a rabid following — overnight, it seems, the wines went from insider secret to heavily allocated and collectible. To anyone who has had the pleasure of drinking these wines, their cult status is no surprise. They are simply stunning.
Wasenhaus is a collaboration between Alex Götze and Chrioph Wolber, two German wine maniacs who met in Burgundy. Neither is from a traditional winemaking background but they cut their teeth working in some of the finest addresses in the region including Comte Armand, Pierre Morey, Domaine Leflaive, and Domaine de Montille (in fact, Alex was still managing the vineyards for de Montille up until 2021).
The two friends established Wasenhaus to apply their Burgundian experience to the unique terroirs of Baden, the beating heart of German Pinot Noir country. Their focus is on old vines, ancient clones, organic farming, and a delicate touch in the cellar. The wines have the elegance, transparency and cut that we love about the finest of Burgundy but there is a singular aromatic lift and mineral crunch that speaks uniquely of Baden.
Alex and Christoph’s 2022 Spätburgunder is a beautiful, tense, layered Pinot Noir and the perfect entrée to their range. It’s drinking beautifully at the moment — with tons of ripe red fruit and soil-driven verve — and will certainly continue to evolve with grace over the next 5-15 years.

Our entry level Pinot comes from mostly sandy and loess soils of different origins. Fermented mostly destemmed (about 30% whole bunch) in an open-top fermenter - fermentation between 15 and 18 days and aged in used French oak for about 14 months. (tech notes courtesy of Wasenhaus via Vom Boden)
