Baricchi Timorasso: A Gorgeous Piedmont White, After 10 Years Aging

Stylized image of Baricchi Timorasso

Time is magic, and today we have a stunning wine that could only achieve its remarkable equilibrium and complexity with the influence of the passing years. It comes from Cascina Baricchi, an insider secret for lovers of classic, layered, age-worthy Barbaresco. The wines are so well regarded that in the early years of the estate, legendary producer Bruno Giacosa purchased fruit from Barrichi’s “Cassasse” parcel for his iconic 1990 Red Label Riserva, long considered one of the region's very best wines.

At a recent tasting of Baricchi back vintages, we were blown away by the quality on offer. Surprisingly though, with all of the incredible Nebbiolo on the table, it was this singular, ultra-long-aged Timorasso that kept us coming back to the glass.

The 2014 Cascina Baricchi Timorraso “Ca Va Sans Dire” is a total showstopper. It comes from a vineyard planted in the 1950s on clay and limestone soils. It spent the first 6 months of its life in stainless steel tanks with regular stirring of the lees. It was then moved to neutral barriques where it rested for a whopping nine years before bottling.

This extended aging has allowed the wine to achieve a beautiful harmonic resolution. It is wide open, with aromatics of toasted almond, honeysuckle, and dried herbs leading to a deeply concentrated palate loaded with ripe yellow and white stone fruit. All of this complexity and power is delivered alongside a firm core of limestone rich minerality.

It’s a joy to share fully mature white wine of this caliber sourced directly from the winery. The only catch is that there just isn’t that much available. So don’t wait to place your order for this perfect wine to pair with the changing of the seasons.

Cascina Baricchi, Timorasso Ca Va Sans Dire, NV [2014] $69.99
