Spanish Sparklers We'd Like to Drink Every Day: AT Roca's Perfect Pair

Agustí Torello Roca is making some of the most delicious sparkling wines you can find anywhere in the world, at prices that make them impossible to resist. They’re aromatic with clear-cut acidity, beautifully ripe white fruits, and plenty of mineral cut. To say that these out-perform many more expensive and more famous bottles of bubbly would be a severe understatement. They really are that good.

This hasn’t happened by accident — Agustí dedicates a huge amount of love and time to organically farming his Penedès vineyards. Grapes come from high elevation, north facing, (up to 700 meters) and a wide variety of soil types — the Macabeo on clay, limestone and gravel, the Xarel-lo and Garnatxa on clay and limestone, and Parellada on sandstone. Most of the vines are within a few kilometers of the Mediterranean, and the diversity of terroirs, coupled with the maritime climate, ensure a savory blast of non-fruit flavors.

Before AT Roca was established in 2013, the Torello name was already well known in the region for producing high quality Cava under the label Agustí Torello Mata, named after Agustí’s grandfather. But the reputation of Cava had been suffering through years of deregulation, consolidation and an overabundance of industrial wine ( the vast majority of Cava is produced by just four houses). So after finishing his winemaking studies in Tarragona and an apprenticeship with first wave organic Champagne grower Bruno Michel, Agustí knew that he wanted to follow a more farming focused path.

AT Roca was formed with the intention of joining the newly-established DO Classic Penedes, which requires organic farming, estate-grown fruit, a minimum of 15 months aging before release, and vintage labeling. AT Roca quickly emerged as one of the stars of this young DO, and we’ve been dazzled by the wines from our first sips. The 2022 vintage just landed and they are absolutely stunning.
