Joh Jos Prum, Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese, 2007

This is the kind of Riesling the Mosel is famous for: an off-dry Spätlese from Joh. Jos. Prüm's Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and the 2007 has already done nearly two decades of waiting so you don't have to. Spätlese means "late harvest". The grapes are picked riper than for a basic Kabinett, so you get more flesh and a touch of sweetness while the wine stays light on its feet. Sonnenuhr means "sundial". Back vintages of top Mosel Riesling are some of the best values in the cellar world, and the chance to taste what time does to a classic Spätlese is the whole reason to pick up a bottle like this. It's for the curious Riesling drinker as much as the collector, and it doesn't need an occasion. A weeknight plate of something salty or spicy suits it just fine.

"Elegant aromas of Bing cherry, apple blossom and roasted pine nuts. Sweet, delicate and nonetheless creamy on the palate, with sweet herbs and a touch of vanilla. Lemon curd and slate animate this serious spatlese's compelling finish." —Joel B. Payne

Robert Parker

"The Prum 2007 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese is intriguingly- as well as gorgeously-scented with peony, narcissus, heliotrope, mint, and fresh apple. Creamy and buoyant on the palate, it caresses and seduces with suggestions of lemon chiffon and vanilla flan, but then leaves a surprisingly adamant, stony, subtly zesty finish as if to put the taster on notice that there is a lot more here than meets the palate at such a youthful juncture." —David Schildknecht

Wine Enthusiast

92 points

"Shows some characteristic Prüm stinky notes, but there's plenty of fruit lurking underneath. Pear, honey, melon and citrus flavors give an impression of great ripeness, amplified by the creamy texture and custardy mouthfeel, but there's also enough crisp acidity for balance. Drink now–2025, maybe longer." —Joe Czerwinski

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pork schnitzel with lingonberry; smoked trout with horseradish cream; Thai larb or green papaya salad; Sichuan dan dan noodles; aged Gouda or Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Prüm Spätlese style: ripe peach, apricot and citrus over smoky slate minerality, plus the honeyed, lightly petrol-tinged notes that mature Mosel Riesling typically develops. It's light-bodied and delicate, with gentle sweetness balanced by bright, racy acidity, finishing long, clean and mineral.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
