Here's a rare chance to open a gold-capsule Prüm Auslese from Wehlener Sonnenuhr with more than three decades of bottle age already behind it. The Prüm family has farmed in Wehlen for over 400 years, though Joh. Jos. Prüm as an estate dates to 1911, and Sonnenuhr ("sundial") is the village's great vineyard. Auslese means the grapes were picked selectively for extra ripeness, and the Goldkapsel (gold capsule) marks a special selection within that tier. That makes this one of the most serious sweet Rieslings the Mosel makes, from a vintage most of us were never going to cellar ourselves. Someone else did the waiting, and that's the whole appeal. Open it at the end of a dinner with people who will enjoy what more than 30 years in the bottle does to a great Riesling.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Mosel Auslese profile, deepened by long bottle age: honeyed apricot, peach and baked apple, plus the petrol, slate and gentle spice notes that mature Riesling develops. These wines are typically light-bodied and low in alcohol. Racy acidity keeps the sweetness lifted rather than heavy, leading to a long finish that is both honeyed and mineral.
