The powerful counterpart to Altos las Hormigas's Altamira bottling, from the buzzy high-altitude district of Gualtallary. The vineyard sits even higher, around 1,300 meters, on limestone-rich soils where Altos has farmed since 2011 with terroir guru Pedro Parra. Where Altamira is elegant and perfumed, Gualtallary is rounder and more concentrated, with great depth and that chalky, high-mountain tension. Aged in concrete and large neutral oak so the site speaks clearly. A compelling lesson in how much a few hundred meters and a different soil can change Malbec.

"The 2022 Malbec Appellation Gualtallary hails from the Monastere area in Gualtallary, Uco Valley. Seventy-five percent of the wine was aged in concrete for 12 months, while the remaining 25% was aged in 3,500-liter untoasted foudres for 12 months. The nose reveals a vermouth-like character with wild herbs and delicate fruit, showcasing hints of poleo (mint), blood orange and blueberries. The enticing palate offers a chalky, fine-grained texture and an energetic, vertical structure. It finishes with a lingering impression reminiscent of Pisco Quebranta. It's a delicious high-altitude wine." —Joaquín Hidalgo

Robert Parker

"From sandy limestone soils in the Tupungato Winelands, the 2022 Malbec Appellation Gualtallary is a reference-point expression of this region, opening with a crystal-clear nose of myriad herbs, dried flowers and underbrush with a dark yet vibrant core of mixed fruits. The herbal nature continuously gains intensity with further aeration, introducing a delectable yet laser-focused palate with seamless precision and vibrant acidity. It concludes with high-toned, mineral-drenched persistence and a luscious yet composed fruit profile, gaining grip and depth with increased oxygen exposure. While already undeniably delicious, this will be a pleasure to watch evolve over the coming two decades. Compared to the Appellation Altamira bottling, this focuses squarely on aromatic herbs and chalky, vertical energy that sits higher in the mouth versus the former's floral depth and horizontal power." —Matthew Luczy

More about Altos las Hormigas

In 1995, when everyone else was planting Cabernet Sauvignon, winemaker Alberto Antonini and entrepreneur Antonio Morescalchi bet everything on Malbec in Mendoza. They were right. Altos las Hormigas pioneered terroir-driven Malbec with biodynamic farming, minimal intervention, and deep knowledge of places like Altamira and Gualtallary. Antonini's global palate brings new ideas every vintage. These are unshowy, ambitious wines from people who actually understand what they're doing.
