A single-vineyard Gattinara sitting squarely in its drinking window, from the estate that taught Alto Piemonte to bottle its crus separately. Castelle is a one-hectare parcel on the iron-rich, acidic volcanic soils that set Gattinara apart from the alkaline marl of Barolo — Nebbiolo grown up the Sesia valley below Monte Rosa, at altitude, where cool nights keep the perfume intact. Antoniolo was founded in 1948 by Mario Antoniolo; his daughter Rosanna started bottling the individual vineyards in the 1970s, when nobody in the zone was doing it, and Alberto and Lorella run the estate today, farming organically. The wine is 100% Nebbiolo, fermented slowly in concrete with native yeasts, macerated around eighteen days and then aged in barrel and large cask before release, from a parcel that yields only a couple hundred cases in a typical year. 2007 was a warm year with an early harvest, and nearly two decades on the wine has softened into a lovely balance of remaining fruit and mature savor. Decant it off its sediment; there is no rush to finish the bottle, or the case.

Tasting Profile

Sour cherry and dried strawberry with rose petal, blood orange, leather and a smoky, ferrous note. Medium-bodied with fine, resolved tannins and cool-climate acidity. Aromatic and long on the finish.
