Au Bon Climat was founded in 1982 by the late Jim Clendenen with a single, then-radical idea: make Burgundian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Santa Barbara County. Four decades on, ABC remains the benchmark for the style, and the team Jim trained continues to make the wines exactly as he would have wanted — restrained, balanced, built for the table. The Santa Barbara Pinot is the entry to the range: a multi-vineyard blend that captures everything the appellation does well. The 2024 is classic ABC — red berry and blueberry fruit with savory edges of bay leaf and wet stone, the kind of fresh, food-friendly Pinot that has made this winery a perennial bottle on smart wine lists.

More about Au Bon Climat

Au Bon Climat was founded in 1982 by Jim Clendenen and Adam Tolmach (Clendenen solo-leading since 1990) with a simple vision: make Burgundian-styled wine in California. The name means 'well-exposed vineyard,' and their Santa Maria Valley base lets Pacific fog and ocean breezes cool the sun. Bien Nacido is their primary source for exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and Clendenen's been named Winemaker of the Year twice. These are American Pinots that actually understand restraint.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

The ultimate Tuesday-night Pinot: roast chicken, grilled salmon, mushroom pasta, duck confit, pork loin with cherries. Charcuterie and washed-rind cheeses work beautifully, as does a simple burger.

Tasting Profile

Red berry, blueberry, and blood orange aromas with savory hints of bay leaf, white pepper, and wet stone. Medium-bodied with bright acidity, fine tannins, and a balanced, gently earthy finish — Burgundian in sensibility, sunny in fruit.
