Few wines in the Rhône—or anywhere—carry the weight of legacy like Auguste Clape’s Cornas. A benchmark since the 1950s, this is Syrah in its purest and most untamed form: whole-cluster fermented, aged in old foudres, bottled unfiltered, and always sourced from some of Cornas’ steepest, most historic slopes.

The 2022 vintage is classic Clape—dark, meaty, and wild out of the gate, with layers of black olive, violets, iron, and cracked pepper. But underneath the rustic surface lies a coiled core of minerality and tannic structure that reveals itself slowly with air, or over decades in the cellar. There’s no polish, no makeup—just granite, grape, and time.

This is not a wine to rush. Best with long-braised meats, aged cheeses, or tucked away for a decade or more. For those who understand the language of old-school Cornas, Clape 2022 speaks fluently—and will only grow more eloquent with age.

For lovers of the Northern Rhone August Clape needs zero introduction. Even those less familiar with the slopes along the river where Syrah reigns supreme have often heard the name. Clape is that important.

He almost single-handedly brought his home village of Cornas out of the old, négociant-centered model and into the estate-focused 21st Century. A former mayor of Cornas he is now synonymous with the best of what this village has to offer.

After nearly fifty years of winemaking, August is still going strong, though his son and grandson are doing much of the heavy lifting.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2022 Cornas is both classic and rustic, with hints of ripe black fruits, earthy tones and leather on the nose. It's full-bodied, fleshy and expansive, showing elevated flavor concentration. Beefy and monolithic, the 2022 carries an introverted attitude, finishing with firm structure yet plenty of Clape personality. This needs time." -Nicolas Greinacher

"Bottled in mid-November, the 2022 Cornas from Clape saw the integration of the crop from the cuvée Renaissance due to a challenging flowering period and dry conditions, resulting in a production volume 45% less than usual. Evoking aromas of acetate, nail polish, violets and spices mingled with carnal/animal-like notes, it's dense and firm, with an important chassis of tannins leading to a firm, smoky, somber, meaty and introverted finish, suggesting the presence of phenols, which explains its rustic structure. "It reminds me of 2017," said Olivier Clape." -Yohan Castaing

"Cask samples tasted at the domaine.Sample 1: Reynards.Wild and animal nose – the palate is earthy, with a ferruginous note. Rosemary, herbal garrigue and so much going on. There is a firm graphite element that really comes through.Sample 2: Mazards.Inky with dark cherry and rose. So much grip with firm and fine tannins, stony notes, dark chocolate and spice.Sample 3: Petite Cote.Dense and dark – like squid ink. Kirsch and sweet fruit on the palate with rounded, ample and supple tannins and bay leaf and herbs coming through on the finish – wonderful.Sample 4: Reynards Vieille Vignes.Baked cherry pie, kirsch and cocoa-nib nose. Ripe generous and fleshy fruit on the palate. There is a dark side to this wine, brooding yet still with electric energy beneath."
