A single-vineyard Barbaresco from Quazzolo, one of the smallest growers in the appellation (around 10,000 bottles a year) and a name to know for traditionalists. The family has roots in the Ovello cru going back to 1958; third-generation Danilo Quazzolo now farms and even designs the labels himself. Cole is 100% Nebbiolo made in a classic, terroir-driven style. 2016 was a benchmark Piedmont vintage, structured and beautifully balanced, so this has the bones for the cellar but is starting to open. Give it a decant.

More about Azienda Agricola Quazzolo

Quazzolo is Barbaresco with a rock-and-roll streak: a tiny, one-man operation on the Ovello hillside whose owner draws his own labels and makes old-school, long-aged Nebbiolo.

Danilo Quazzolo's family has worked vines on Ovello, in the cool northern reaches of Barbaresco, for generations, for many years selling off grapes and bulk wine. Danilo took over in the early 2010s and turned it into a boutique estate, handling everything himself, from the vineyard to the bottling. Production is small, on the order of 10,000 bottles a year, and almost entirely Nebbiolo.

The farming avoids herbicides, and the winemaking is classic: fermentation in concrete, a maceration of around two weeks, then at least two years in large oak barrels, longer than the rules require, to tame the wines' youthful exuberance. Alongside the straight Barbaresco there are single-vineyard bottlings from Ovello and Cole and a Riserva. These are firm, structured Barbarescos that reward a decant and a few years in the cellar.

Braised beef, veal Milanese, tajarin with ragu, porcini, aged Toma and hard cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Classic Nebbiolo: red cherry, rose, tar and dried herbs with firm but balanced tannins. Structured, still youthful, opens with air.
