Clos de Gravières—another of Santenay's premier vineyard blocks—produces some of the appellation's finest white wines. The '1er Cru' designation indicates wines meeting Burgundy's highest standards. At two years old, this 2023 Chardonnay shows the kind of mineral precision and stone fruit that characterizes Clos de Gravières—a site known for its limestone-rich soils. The cool exposure creates wines of exceptional acidity and food compatibility. For those seeking Burgundy Chardonnay with premier cru quality at accessible prices, this wine demonstrates why serious collectors value Santenay's underrated potential.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"The 2023 Santenay Les Gravières 1er Cru Blanc comes from 1.7 hectares of vine planted at the top of the vineyard. This has a more classical nose than the Beauregard, with peach skin, citrus fruit and apple peeling notes. The palate is well balanced and a little waxy, with a lightly spiced entry and satisfying extract on the finish. Give this a year in bottle." —Neal Martin

"Lovely depth of flavour, offering pronounced aromas of lemon peel and Granny Smith apples – more taut and chiselled than the Beauregard. The structure is admirably racy for the vintage, with plenty of freshness to counterbalance the rich extract. The grapes are from a section of Jessiaume's Gravières on white marl; there are 1.2ha in production today, with another half-hectare planted but declassified for now. The wine is ageing at present in cask, one-third new."

More about Bachey Legros

The Bachey-Legros family has worked with vines for six generations in Santenay, and their domaine's defining characteristic is obsession with old vines. Much of the vineyard was planted between 1935 and 1955, with some vines pushing 90 years old. These ancient roots produce concentrated grapes with lower yields and a profound sense of terroir—exactly what Samuel and Lénaïc want. The wines are delicious proof that old vines make a real difference, delivering the kind of depth and complexity you can't fake.
