Genevrieres from vines pushing ninety years old, in one of the most testing vintages Burgundy has faced in a decade. Charles Ballot's approach does not move: hand harvesting, plowed soils rather than herbicides, native yeasts, a maximum of 25% new oak, no batonnage, twelve months in barrel and six months in tank. Genevrieres sits mid-slope in Meursault with Perrieres alongside it to the south and Charmes below, on Bathonian limestone shot through with marl, the middle ground of the great trio, fuller than Perrieres and tighter and more mineral than Charmes. Ballot's parcel lies in the Dessus section, where the old vines crop at barely 35 to 40 hectoliters per hectare. Where 2020 was ripe and seamless, 2024 came out of a wet, mildew-fought season with a small crop and a taut, high-toned profile: less flesh, more nerve. Cellar it. After Perrieres, this is the domaine's most age-worthy white.

"The 2024 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru has a very different bouquet to the Les Charmes, hints of oyster shell and seaweed filtering through the slightly honeyed citrus fruit. The palate is taut and fresh with fine acidity, perhaps a little more nervosité compared to the Les Charmes with a fresh citrus finish. This is another Meursault cut in a more elegant style.
