Meursault in everything but the address: this Bourgogne Blanc is drawn from several parcels on the edges of Meursault plus a small piece in Puligny-Montrachet, farmed and vinified exactly like the domaine's village and Premier Cru wines. Charles Ballot took over his family's ten hectares in 2000 and rebuilt the estate around lower yields, hand harvesting, plowed soils in place of herbicides, and native-yeast fermentation. The whites see very little new oak and no batonnage at all, spending twelve months in barrel and six more in tank, a recipe aimed at cut and definition rather than the fat, nutty Meursault of a generation ago. 2024 was a brutal growing season in the Cote de Beaune, with persistent rain, heavy mildew pressure and a short crop, but the Chardonnay that came through has real tension and zesty freshness. This is the bottle to buy by the case.
