Montosoli is one of the most celebrated crus in all of Brunello, a hill in the cooler northern reaches of Montalcino, and Baricci is its standard-bearer, founder Nello Baricci having bought the land in 1955. The vineyard sits on ancient Pliocene marine soils of marl, quartz and fossils, and the northern position gives this Brunello its hallmark refinement and perfume rather than brute power. The 2021 vintage is exceptional. Hand-harvested, fermented about 20 days, then rested about three years in Slavonian oak for old-school elegance. A pure, aromatic, age-worthy Sangiovese from a hallowed site.

"The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli is darkly wrapped up in its youthful state. Swirling unlocks depths of dried black cherry, dusty rose, crushed stone, violet pastille and clove. It's round and soothing on the palate, with perfumed red berry fruit, mineral tones and textures of pure silk. This displays remarkable balance through the raspberry-tinged finish, which is long and structured but still fresh. The 2021 is fantastic and harmonious throughout." —Eric Guido

"One of the founding members of the consorzio, Baricci is now in the capable hands of the third generation – brothers Federico and Francesco Buffi. The Brunello has been made since 1971, always and only from the family’s vineyards on the hill of Montosoli. The fresh nose builds gradually with accents of candied lilac, mint, rooibos tea and punctuating, brambly berries. Judiciously weighted with glossy fruit, this expands smoothly with plentiful tannins that are the texture of fine sand. Nutmeg and liquorice perfume the palate. The acidity is cool and refreshing, and a pleasantly bitter finish lingers with pine and walnut. Already likable but not quite ready." —Michaela Morris

"Dark fruit flavors of black cherry, black currant and blackberry are accented by notes of violet, mineral and wild herbs in this racy and complex red, with terrific energy from start to finish. While this is focused on the fruit, there’s a lot going on. Best from 2029 through 2050."

"Truffle, violet, ripe wild berry and dark spice aromas mingle with a whiff of new leather on the outrageously gorgeous Baricci 2021 Brunello Montosoli. From one of the pioneering estates and always one of the best wines in the denomination, the 2021 is exceptional, delivering layers of flavors including succulent Morello cherry, licorice, blood orange, black raspberry and ground clove accompanied by a backbone of refined, tightly woven tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it lifted and balanced. Drink 2030–2041." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Baricci

Nello Baricci was the first producer to get badge #1 when the Brunello Consorzio formed in 1967—a master of Sangiovese before most people even knew the word. His grandsons Federico and Francesco continue making wine from the only vineyard wholly planted in the Montosoli 'Grand Cru'—five hectares of cooler-climate Sangiovese that age in Slavonian oak with understated elegance. It's a lesson in terroir humility.
