Giacomo Fenocchio has built a reputation as one of Barolo’s great traditionalists, crafting wines that speak clearly of their vineyard origins. Castellero, a small cru nestled between the powerhouse sites of Cannubi and Bussia, offers the best of both worlds—elegance and approachability from its sandy soils, with just enough structure to age beautifully. The 2020 vintage, marked by balance and purity, plays perfectly into Fenocchio’s restrained, old-school winemaking, allowing Nebbiolo’s natural character to shine.

Roses, red cherries, and orange zest leap from the glass, layered with subtle earth, spice, and a hint of crushed stone. The tannins are firm yet refined, framing the wine’s core of fresh acidity and mineral depth. While this Barolo will reward patience, it’s surprisingly expressive even young, especially with a long decant. A perfect match for truffle dishes, braised meats, or simply an evening dedicated to appreciating classic Barolo craftsmanship.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Fenocchio's 2020 Barolo Castellero is floral, savory and full of energy. Crushed flowers, herbs, mint and spice meld into a core of dark red cherry/plum fruit. This mid-weight, classy Barolo is all charm. Soft contours add to its immediacy and overall appeal." —Vinous

Wine Enthusiast

"Lifted aromas that highlight the deft hand of the grower as crushed strawberries and raspberries lift from the glass intertwine with hints of sage, dried roses and anise. Round, plush and inviting, the wine cuddles the palate, but it is the big spoon. Structured, strong and firm, the wine shines as ripe Bing cherries pop with freshness and vitality finishing with a subtle earthy note."

More about Giacomo Fenocchio

Five generations of Fenocchios have been making wine from their Barolo holdings since 1894. Giacomo took over in 1964 and expanded the estate, then passed the torch to his son Claudio in 1989. They own four prized Cru plots—Bussia, Villero, Castellero, Cannubi—and make Barolo the traditional way: long maceration, no roto-fermentors, only indigenous methods that speak terroir.

Giacomo Fenocchio | View all Giacomo Fenocchio products

Claudio Fenocchio (son of Giacomo) is one of those unsung heroes who makes traditionally-styled Barolo but remains in the shadows of the superstars like Rinaldi or Mascarello. He is just as dedicated to his farming and he makes wine in the same non-interventionist fashion, aging his wines entirely in large Slavonian casks.

What stands out about Fenocchio is his terroir precision. Unlike Bartolo Mascarello, where Maria Teresa blends all her grapes into a single Barolo cuvée, Fenocchio likes to produce cru-specific wines. Tasting through his line-up, we are always stunned at how the characteristic of each vineyard jumps out.
