Traditional Barolo from one of Piedmont's most legendary estates—now at perfect maturity. Bartolo Mascarello famously refused the single-vineyard trend, believing blended wines from four top sites in Barolo and La Morra create superior expression. His daughter Maria Teresa continues this philosophy, and critics say the estate is now "at its height." This 2011 has had over a decade to integrate, showing the elegant, floral complexity that defines great traditional Barolo. Legendary traditionalist estate (founded 1918). Bartolo refused single-cru trend—blends from 4 top vineyards. Now run by daughter Maria Teresa. Mature, elegant, iconic.

"The 2011 Barolo from Bartolo Mascarello is such a surprise. Bright, translucent red, the 2011 immediately impresses with its captivating freshness and precision. There’s so much vibrancy. Given the warm, dry year, I was expecting to see a Barolo with some early signs of maturity, but the 2011 is incredibly young, not to mention an absolute delight. Time in the glass does start to reveal a bit less polish in the tannins relative to the very finest vintages, but that is expected in a very challenging vintage. This is a terrific showing." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The 2011 Barolo is a very expressive wine with more determination and muscle than you usually get in the wines of Bartolo Mascarello. The bouquet opens to plush flavors of red fruit and cherry with grilled herb, tobacco and mineral delineation. Its structure is yielding and round and the finish is ripe with soft fruit flavors. Make no mistake, it doles out complexity and an ethereal sense of balsam herb, cola and licorice that is the hallmark of this historic estate with a tiny garage winery in the town of Barolo. The alcohol reading here is 14.5% compared to 14% in the 2010 vintage." —Monica Larner

"Perhaps the most refined 2011 Barolo precise, mineral, complex and, atypically for the vintage, still closed."

Wine Spectator

93 points

"A delicate, aromatic style, with floral, sandalwood, cherry, tea and spice flavors. Beautifully balanced and long, with a firm underlying structure."

Kerin O'Keefe

"Woodland berry, tilled soil, cake spices and a whiff of game are some of the aromas you'll find on this fragrant, impressive wine. The full-bodied, elegant palate delivers juicy red cherry, black raspberry, clove, chopped herbs and a hint of cured meat alongside a backbone of firm, refined tannins and bright acidity." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Bartolo Mascarello

Bartolo made a name for himself resisting the modernizing trends in the region, encapsulated by a message he put on a hand-drawn bottle label: “No Barriques, No Berlusconi”. He died a few years ago but the domain is now in the gifted hands of his daughter Maria Theresa, who has raised the profile even further with a series of fabulous vintages. Still hewing rigorously to tradition (long macerations, and no barriques!), they are one of the very few domains to still release just one Barolo made from a blend of all their parcels (as was generally the case before single vineyard cuvees started to appear in the 1960s). 30% of the Barolo comes from Rocche di Annunziata in La Morra; the rest from three different vineyards in the commune of Barolo: Rue, San Lorenzo and Cannubi.
