Antoine Sunier is something of an anomaly: born and raised in Dijon, the beating heart of Burgundy, he didn't come from a winemaking family. He fell into wine sideways, by way of his older brother Julien (and, as the story goes, a few well-placed haircuts), and is now one of Beaujolais' most exciting young vignerons. He works naturally, vinifying in the traditional semi-carbonic fashion that gives cru Beaujolais its lift and perfume. This Villages cuvee, Poursuite, is Gamay at its most honest: bright, fresh, and built for drinking, not contemplating. Chill it down half an hour and pour with abandon.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"From 5.5 hectares, including over four hectares of declassified vines in Régnié, the 2024 Beaujolais-Villages Gamay Poursuite undergoes a six-day carbonic maceration, using a pied de cuve to start the fermentation, and is aged in cement. It has an attractive bouquet with wild strawberry and cranberry fruit, well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a killer line of acidity that keeps this Beaujolais on its tippy-toes. Impressive length, this is great value." —Neal Martin

More about Antoine Sunier

Antoine Sunier grew up in Dijon, where his mother was a hairdresser whose regular client was Christophe Roumier, the connection that launched his brother Julien's wine career. Antoine went into telecommunications instead, but in 2012 left to study enology in Beaune and then interned with Jean-Claude Lapalu. He started in 2014 with 0.8 hectares in Régnié and now makes Régnié and Morgon from organically farmed old-vine Gamay: whole-cluster, native-yeast fermentations, used barrels, minimal sulfur. Serious, structured Beaujolais from a name to watch.
