Falstaff "Winemaker of the Year" 2008—Bernhard Ott proved that elegant, long-lived wines could be made from Grüner Veltliner. Fourth-generation winemaker since 1889, Ott converted to biodynamics in 2007 after visiting Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The Spiegel vineyard holds Austria's prestigious Erste Lage (First Growth) classification. Kamptal's signature crystal-clear minerality emerges from primary rock, loess, and clay soils. These are serious, age-worthy whites that develop beautifully over 10-15+ years.

Bernhard pioneered organic and biodynamic winemaking in Austria after a trip to the Domaine Romanee Conti in Burgundy, where Aubert de Villaine was making the world’s greatest wines with biodynamics.

Upon his return to Austria he and fellow winemakers Johannes Hirsch and Fred Loimer established respekt-BIODYN, a community oriented group of biodynamic farmers committed to helping each other and the earth through biodynamics.

He even goes as far to make his own compost, a task most growers avoid, but which makes Bernhard giddy as a school boy when showing off his tarp covered piles. Composting may sound like a bunch of shit to some, but his heaping use of the stuff has enabled enough water retention that he doesn’t need to irrigate, even in these record breaking hot recent vintages.

Even though he’s been in charge of his 5th generation estate since 1993 (at the age of 21), he has never stopped experimenting, whether with vessels, stem and skin contact, farming techniques or different grapes. His ultimate goal has always been to prove that his single vineyards: Rosenberg and Spiegel were capable of producing world class, long lived wines.

Grüner Veltliner soars to new heights in his capable hands and even his first three tiers Am Berg, Fass 4 and Der Ott are some of the best values in Austria.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 94
"The 2021 Grüner Veltliner Spiegel was picked on well-ventilated terraces of loess on top of calcareous, iron-rich Danubian gravels. On the nose, yeast blends into the gentle woodland scent of moss, edged with just a little pepper. The palate is rounded, with a heightened sense of pepper on a very airy, smooth, almost ethereal body. Soaring towards the sky, this is fresh and bright, all reaching upwards. At once light-footed and sprightly yet profound, the entire wine is vivid with white pepper." -Vinous

"The 2021 Ried Spiegel 1ÖTW Feuersbrunn Grüner Veltliner opens very clear, precise and intense on the nose, with intense and dense white, ripe fruit aromas. On the plate, this is a very rich and textural Veltliner with remarkable and vital acidity. The wine is very complex and long, revealing a long and aromatic as well as intense, powerful and stimulating saline finish. 13% stated alcohol. Screw cap."
