Albariño worth its salt, from a small family cellar in Cambados rather than one of the big names that fill most Rías Baixas shelves. Xurxo Alba's family farmed Albariño in Galicia's Salnés Valley for generations before they began bottling their own in 2006, once Xurxo finished his oenology studies. His cellar sits next door to his parents' restaurant and a little shop selling local artisanal foods, which tells you how this wine is meant to be drunk: at the table, with whatever came out of the water that morning. Every Albamar wine ferments on native yeast, which is rare in the region, and Xurxo farms organically where rainy, humid Galicia allows it and sustainably where it doesn't. This flagship cuvée comes from hand-picked parcels, mostly on granite, in and around Castrelo in Cambados. Rías Baixas is a region of smallholdings, and a careful grower bottling like this one is exactly what's worth hunting for.

More about Bodegas Albamar

Xurxo Alba inherited his family's Albariño vineyards in Rías Baixas and in 2006 began bottling under his own name. He's quickly earned respect as one of the region's most talented young winemakers, using natural yeasts—just 2% of producers in the region do—and blocking malolactic fermentation to showcase the saline minerality that comes from Atlantic-facing coastal terroir. His Alma de Mar captures maritime freshness with genuine depth. This is Albariño made with intention.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Skurnik Wines has to say about this wine:

The estate’s flagship 100% Albariño
hand-harvested from a wide range of parcels, mostly on granite, in and around Castrelo (Cambados) in the Salnés Valley
spontaneously fermented and raised primarily in tank with a small percentage of neutral oak foudre
no malolactic

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Raw oysters, pulpo a la gallega, steamed clams with garlic and parsley, grilled shrimp, or fried calamari with lemon.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Salnés Valley Albariño profile: lemon, white peach and apricot with a salty, sea-spray edge and a stony minerality from the granite. It's typically medium-bodied with bright, mouthwatering acidity, and slow native-yeast fermentation tends to add a little texture before a dry, briny finish. Think Sancerre-level zip with riper stone fruit.
