A plush, crowd-pleasing Saint-Estephe from Chateau Haut-Marbuzet, an estate so good it is widely considered cru classe in quality despite its Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel ranking. Henri Duboscq farms 61 hectares tucked between Cos d'Estournel and Montrose, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and is known for generous fruit and a signature dose of new oak. 2019 was an excellent, ripe Bordeaux vintage. This is approachable young but will reward a decade or more in the cellar; decant if drinking now.

"The 2019 Haut-Marbuzet is fabulous. In fact, the 2019 is one of the best recent vintages I can remember tasting. There is an energy to the 2019, a feeling of vibrancy, that is compelling. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mint, chalk and blood orange are lifted by bright acids and veins of tannin that need time to fully integrate. The 2019 is seriously impressive, to say the least. " —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The 2019 Haut-Marbuzet has turned out very nicely indeed, offering up a deep bouquet of berry fruit, loamy soil, forest floor and spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit that's framed by ripe, powdery tannins and succulent acids. Already persuasively seamless and integrated, and much less marked by its new oak than was the case for this château a decade ago, this is well worth seeking out." —William Kelley

"Tasted blind. Looks quite evolved. Fresh, perky, energetic nose. Dense and rich and much riper than the average Médoc. Good effort, with no shortage of tannin underneath. A promising package! Even if a tad chunky in terms of tannins."

Decanter

"Lovely fragranced nose, heady perfumed, full. This has a silky texture, smooth and driven with vibrant energy and a coolness to the fruit profile, blueberries and cherries with some definite liquorice spicing. The overall frame is dense and still knitted down right now. You can feel that this has underlying power but it's still well balanced and integrated at this stage with a lovely freshness. Great potential for ageing." —Georgina Hindle

More about Chateau Haut-Marbuzet

Haut-Marbuzet is the Saint-Estèphe for people who think they don't like Saint-Estèphe. The commune is known for firm, sometimes austere tannins, but the Duboscq family has spent more than seventy years making plush, perfumed, generous claret here.

The estate's roots go back to the MacCarthys, Irish merchants who assembled a property at Marbuzet in the early nineteenth century; it was broken up and sold in pieces in the 1850s. In 1952 Hervé Duboscq bought seven hectares and set about putting it back together. His son Henri joined him about a decade later and has been in charge ever since. Plot by plot, the vineyard has grown to roughly ten times its original size, on the gravel, clay and limestone slopes of the Marbuzet plateau between Cos d'Estournel and Montrose, looking out over the Gironde.

The Duboscqs were among the first in Bordeaux to pick very late and to age their wine entirely in new oak, and they still do both. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a little Cabernet Franc are harvested very ripe and fermented in concrete with native yeasts, and the wine spends 15 to 18 months in new French barrels.

The result is rich, velvety and sweetly spiced, with toasty oak that shows when young and folds in over a decade or more in bottle.
