Pinot Noir from Hemel-en-Aarde, "heaven and earth" in Afrikaans, the cool maritime valley behind Hermanus that has become South Africa's most convincing address for the grape. The Mary Delany Collection is Ginny Povall's outlet for fruit sourced beyond her own Stellenbosch farm, named for the 18th-century British artist whose botanical collages, assembled from hundreds of hand-cut paper pieces, appear on every label. The fruit is hand-harvested and destemmed without crushing, fermented whole-berry in open tanks with punch-downs twice daily, then aged nine months in 300-liter French barrels, only a fifth of them new. That light touch shows: bright red fruit, floral lift and real transparency rather than weight or oak. Serve it with a light chill.

"The 2022 Pinot Noir Mary Delany Collection contains 15% whole bunches with malo in barrel, matured in 300-liter French oak. It has a clean and attractive red cherry and raspberry-scented nose reminiscent of a Central Otago Pinot. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, soft on the opening but with gentle grip here. The judicious use of stems imparts a subtle pepperiness towards the finish. Ginny Povall left America for South Africa's Stellenbosch in 2008, bought Protea Heights farm, and started planting both indigenous flowers and organically-farmed vines. The 21.6-hectare farm grows 10 hectares of indigenous flowers blooming year-round and 5 hectares of high-density biodynamic vineyards. Through regenerative agriculture, they increase soil fertility, build biodiversity, and craft Cabernet-based blends with purpose. It's wine with integrity.
