Pierre Morey is a white-Burgundy legend, the biodynamic pioneer who ran the cellar at Domaine Leflaive for decades, so a red under his Morey-Blanc negoce label is a genuine curveball. He built this label in 1992 out of necessity, when his family lost its rented Meursault vines, and turned it into something serious. Clos du Chapitre sits in the heart of Aloxe-Corton, the sturdier, darker-fruited side of the Cote de Beaune. Fully de-stemmed, fermented with native yeast, gentle extraction, bottled unfined and unfiltered by gravity. A structured, ageworthy red from a master of whites.

"Aromas of cherries, dark berries and sweet soil tones introduce the 2022 Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Clos du Chapitre, a medium to full-bodied, lively wine built around powdery tannins that assert themselves on the youthfully chalky finish." —William Kelley

More about Morey-Blanc

Morey-Blanc is the négociant label of the Morey family of Meursault, the house behind Domaine Pierre Morey, and it exists because of one of Burgundy's great vineyard stories.

In 1935 Auguste Morey became a sharecropper for the Comtes Lafon, tending some of Meursault's best vines in Perrières, Genevrières and Charmes, and his son Pierre took over those leases in the 1970s. When the Lafons began reclaiming their parcels to farm themselves, a process that ended in 1991, the Moreys lost three prestigious appellations. Pierre founded Morey-Blanc the following year to fill the gap, buying grapes and must from carefully chosen growers and making the wines the same way as the domaine's. He was also, from 1988 to 2008, the man running the vines and cellars at Domaine Leflaive, and he took his own estate into biodynamics in the 1990s. His daughter Anne has worked alongside him since the late 1990s, and the next generation, Jean-Victor, joined in 2020.

The winemaking is hand harvest, native yeasts, white wines fermented and aged in barrel for up to two years, and reds almost fully destemmed and usually bottled without fining or filtration. The range leans to white Burgundy but includes reds from the Côte de Beaune. Expect precise, savory wines with the Morey family's restraint.
