Saumur Chenin from the man who spends his other days as Romain Guiberteau's right hand in the cellar — and whose own wines come out leaner, more delicate and more saline than the ones he helps make there. Brendan Stater-West is an Oregonian with no winemaking background who fell for Guiberteau's Chenin while working in a Paris wine shop, moved to Saumur, pestered his way into an apprenticeship, and was handed a hectare of Les Chapaudaises to start his own label in 2015. The organically certified vines sit on sandy-clay-loam over tuffeau, the soft Turonian limestone that gives Saumur whites their chalky spine. Fruit is sorted in the vineyard, pressed as whole clusters and fermented with ambient yeasts in steel; the pH runs so low — around 3.1 — that malolactic conversion sometimes simply never starts in the cold cellar, which is a large part of why these taste the way they do. Eight to ten months on the lees in used barrels adds texture without a whisper of new oak.

An American from Eugene, Oregon, Brendan Stater-West moved to the Loire Valley after falling in love with Chenin Blanc and tracked down Romain Guiberteau to ask for a job. After months of persistence, Guiberteau relented. Now, with his own leased and purchased parcels in the legendary Brézé limestone terroir, Brendan produces Saumur Blanc that showcases the region's electric minerality and purity. His winemaking is guided by organic and sustainable practices, producing wines that prove Loire Chenin Blanc deserves your attention.
