This is Chardonnay from the same slope that gives By Farr its Sangreal Pinot Noir, which is a very big deal in Australia. The site was planted in 1994 on red soil over limestone. The limestone doesn't show at the surface: it starts 20 to 30cm down and runs to the bottom of the vines' root zone, on a very exposed north-facing slope at Bannockburn, Victoria. Gary Farr and his son Nick have worked many vintages in Burgundy, and it shows in how they make this wine. The fruit is picked by hand and pressed as whole bunches. The Farrs sum up this site's style as "understated power and length with a mineral finish." That's our kind of Australian Chardonnay: you notice the stony build before you notice the oak. The 2024 season was dry and warm across the estate, and yields came in below average.

More about By Farr

Gary Farr and his son Nick have worked countless vintages in Burgundy, developing a deep relationship with legends like Jeremy Seysses and Dominique Lafon. Their Moorabool Valley vineyard in Geelong produces Pinot Noir with Old World inspiration and New World fruit—stemmy, red-fruited, mineral-driven Pinot that proves Australia can make serious cool-climate wine. The quality has only improved; their latest Pinots are genuinely closer to great Burgundy than they've ever been. This is wine from the Southern Hemisphere that earns respect on its own terms.

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with tarragon and pan juices, seared scallops in brown butter, pork loin with apples, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect a Burgundian-leaning Chardonnay rather than a big, buttery Aussie one: white peach, citrus and a touch of toasty oak around a stony, mineral core. Typically medium-to-full bodied yet restrained, with bright acidity and a long, dry, chalky finish. Think closer to a Côte de Beaune white than a tropical New World style.
