The Ranch is the Snowden estate in one bottle: Cabernet from the westernmost and easternmost vineyards on the property, joined by a little Merlot from the block that sits between them. At the west end, the Pool Block faces across Napa Valley at 600 to 650 feet on volcanic rhyolite. At the east end, the Lost Orchard sits in a shallow bowl at around 800 feet, the coolest corner of the ranch, just before the land drops into Conn Valley. (A few of the Petite Sirah vines that were growing in the Pool Block when Wayne and Virginia Snowden bought the place in 1955 are still standing. Their grapes have dried to raisins by Cabernet harvest, so the family has never picked them and keeps them as a remembrance.) 2023 suited this kind of site: a cool, even year and one of the longest growing seasons in recent memory, so the fruit ripened slowly. The cellar work is hands-off, with native yeasts, no added acid and no fining, followed by 19 months in French oak, only 30% of it new. This is Napa Cabernet in the classic style rather than the plush one. The family's grapes once went to Silver Oak and Caymus, and this is the quieter way into that same hillside.

More about Snowden Vineyards

The land that is now Snowden Vineyards was first planted to grapes (mostly zinfandel) back in the 1880’s. In 1955 the Snowden family purchased the land and since then they have returned much of the 160 acres to a forest preserve. But they continue to farm 23 acres of mostly Cabernet and Merlot with the utmost care and respect. This is true mountain fruit, located right at the border of the St. Helena and Rutherford AVA’s. The wines are made by a 3rd generation Snowden, Diana, who also is intimately involved in the winemaking at her husband’s estate in Burgundy: Domaine Dujac. That’s right, Diana Snowden-Seysses is married to Jeremy Seysses and together they help produce some of the world’s most sought after Pinot Noir. Turns out they also make extremely good, and very classic, Napa Valley Cabernet and Merlot.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled ribeye with a peppercorn crust; rosemary-garlic lamb chops; roast duck breast with cherry sauce; wild mushroom and farro risotto; aged cheddar or Comté.

Tasting Profile

Black currant, plum and tobacco on the nose. The texture is seamless and the tannins are fine. The touch of Merlot makes it approachable now. It finishes on dark cherry and cedar.
