A 2001 Barolo Riserva from Cavallotto, one of Castiglione Falletto's most stubbornly traditional families, now more than two decades past its vintage. That's exactly what patient, old-school Nebbiolo is made for. Everything the family bottles comes from its own 25 hectares in one unbroken block across the Bricco Boschis and Vignolo crus, all worked by hand on the marl and calcareous clay of the Barolo hills. The house makes two Riservas. One comes from Vigna San Giuseppe, the southwest-facing heart of Bricco Boschis, named for Giuseppe, father of the brothers who first put vineyard names on their labels in 1970. The other comes from Vignolo, a cru slightly lower on the hill; the family bought about 60% of it in 1989 and was the first to bottle it on its own. This family has done things its own way since 1946, when it became the first grower in Castiglione Falletto to make wine from all of its own fruit. For anyone who wants to taste what traditional Barolo turns into with real age, this is the bottle to open, and it's worth decanting gently.

"The 2001 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is wonderfully precise and vibrant right out of the gate. Still tightly wound, the 2001 is so fresh. It’s a great example of what 2001 has to offer at its very best. Cedar, tobacco and floral tones lead into a core of bright red fruit. Brisk acids pull it all together on the close. I have always loved the 2001. Tonight, it delivers on all the potential I first sensed when it was a young wine." —Antonio Galloni

"Cavallotto's Bricco Boschis estate covers some 25ha of vineyard, and Vigna San Giuseppe is the southwest-facing amphitheatre just below the winery in Castiglione Falletto. It has a broad, spicy nose with aromas of seasoned oak and dried red fruit. The palate is juicy and ripe, with dark chocolate-coated fruit flavours and an underlying savoury, earthy tone sustained by fine, silky tannins and remarkable overall balance. Though drinking well now, this will go on for years yet."

More about Cavallotto

The village of Castiglione Falletto is rich with superstars—Giuseppe Mascarello, Brovia, Vietti, Scavino—and Cavallotto stands easily with the best of them. Of this elite group, Cavallotto's wines stand out for their deep fruit, brooding structure, rose petal aromatics, and incredible longevity.

Most of Cavallotto's grapes come from a hill called Bricco Boschis. Cavallotto owns all of it. Thanks to a mostly southern exposure at high altitude and a complex mix of limestone and clay, it's considered one of the top crus of a village known for many great crus. Cavallotto's San Giuseppe Riserva is made from the best grapes from the vineyard's oldest vines, mid-slope.

Cavallotto's other Riserva comes from Vignolo. It is next door to Bricco Boschis and just a little lower down the slope. The wine tends to be less powerful and more floral, and is perfect for drinking on a slightly earlier timescale than the San Giuseppe.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo; tajarin with butter and shaved white truffle; porcini risotto; braised veal cheeks; roast pheasant; a wedge of aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic traditional Barolo Riserva profile: red cherry, dried flowers, tar and an earthy, savoury edge, along with the tea-leaf, leather and forest-floor notes Nebbiolo picks up with bottle age. It's typically medium-bodied but firm, with bright acidity and fine, structured tannins, and it finishes long, dry and gently spicy.
