A tribute bottling from one of Chablis's most committed biodynamic growers. Jean-Marc Brocard founded his domaine in 1973; his son Julien runs the family operation today, farming organically and biodynamically across a wide swath of Chablis (still genuinely rare in the appellation). The VV46 — Vieilles Vignes 46 — comes from a tiny parcel in the Malantes vineyard planted in 1946, the year Jean-Marc was born, as a tribute to his mentor Louis Petit, the man who 'taught him how to make the soil speak.' Massale-selected old vines, aged in 15-hectoliter foudre. The 2023 is riper and rounder than typical Chablis: lush yellow orchard fruit and beeswax wrapping a core of Kimmeridgian salt and stone. Heirloom Chablis with personality.

"The 2023 Chablis Vieilles Vignes V.V.46 comes from the first vineyard given to Julien Brocard's father, the vines were planted in 1946, the same year his father was born. Cropped at 30hl/ha, it has a very pure bouquet with elderflower and light honey and acacia scents. The palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity, just a dab of sour lemon towards the finish. Enjoy over the next 6-8 years." —Neal Martin

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Oysters with mignonette, scallop crudo, sole meunière, roast chicken with tarragon, a wedge of aged Comté, or omakase sushi. Versatile, deeply food-friendly, and capable of aging beautifully for years.

Tasting Profile

Ripe yellow apple, pear, beeswax, white blossom, and lemon curd aromas, layered over a saline, stony Kimmeridgian core. Medium-bodied and rounded, with a long, mineral-driven finish.

Jean-Marc Brocard may not be famous like Dauvissat or Raveneau, but he's a producer worth your attention, and not just because his wines are vastly more affordable and findable. Brocard is a stupendous farmer—he works all of his vines sustainably and in most cases organically and biodynamically (still a rare practice in Chablis). And he has a fairly old-fashioned touch in the winery, with natural-yeast fermentation and aging in large neutral oak casks.
