Treinta y Dos means thirty-two, and it points to the block of ungrafted Pinot Noir planted in 1932 that Piero Incisa della Rocchetta found abandoned when he bought this Patagonian property in 2004. Those are Chacra's oldest vines, and this is the estate's flagship: the most structured of the reds, yet somehow also the most graceful. Farmed biodynamically on layered clay, sand, and pebbles, it's fermented with native yeasts, aged largely in concrete and neutral French oak, and bottled unfiltered. Violets, black cherry, and crushed stone play against fine, velvety tannins and a fresh, mineral-driven finish. This magnum is soft enough to open now but built to reward years in the cellar, and the large format only slows and smooths that evolution.

"Like the majority of these wines, the percentage of wine in concrete that didn't see any oak in the 2020 Treinta y Dos has been increased to 50%, and the remaining 50% matured in French oak barrels (only 10% new) for nine months. It comes from a plot planted in 1932 on clay, sand and silt soils that deliver the most structured of Chacra's reds. The wine fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts and has moderate 12.5% alcohol, which for a warmer and riper year like 2020, is remarkable. But of course, comparisons bring out the truth: 2020 was quite different climate wise from 2021, and the wines from 2020 show it. There's a little more ripeness, and the quality of the tannins is not the same, probably because of a hurried ripening of the grapes; plus, it's a little grainier and has a little more rusticity in the mouthfeel. It's faintly oaky but only faintly, even if there's no new oak whatsoever. 9,972 bottles were filled in November 2021." —Luis Gutiérrez

More about Chacra

Jean Marc Roulot was at dinner at Guillaume d’Angerville’s place with their friend Piero, the founder of Argentina's culty Chacra winery. Piero mentioned, while discussing his Patagonian terroir, his desire to try making a white cuvée in Argentina.

Now, Roulot is one of the best Chardonnay growers on the planet, so he’d be a good guy to chat up about making white wines of terroir. But he doesn’t seem a likely candidate to jet off to Patagonia and start making Argentinian Chardonnay.

But Piero had found a unique terroir in Patagonia and Roulot was intrigued. Intrigued enough to propose working with him, and when Roulot visited he found, in his words, a “magical place” where “nature is so strong.” This was an opportunity to do something new: work with a friend, “not trying to make a copy of Burgundy in Argentina—totally different. Trying to produce a good Chardonnay in Argentina.”

And that’s what they’ve done. Piero’s magical terroir and Roulot’s Chardonnay touch come together to make an amazing, totally new white wine. The Chacra Mainque Chardonnay comes from three plots with sand over mineral soils with river rocks and limestone. Desert-like weather (hot days, cold nights) make ripe fruit with good acidity.
