Larmandier-Bernier’s Champagne Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru Non Dosé “Terre de Vertus” 2017 is a pure and powerful expression of Chardonnay from the Premier Cru village of Vertus in the Côte des Blancs. Crafted from a single vintage and vineyard, this cuvée captures the essence of Vertus’ chalk-rich soils and Larmandier-Bernier’s dedication to biodynamic farming and minimal intervention. Vinified in stainless steel and oak, and made without dosage, “Terre de Vertus” emphasizes the wine’s natural acidity, minerality, and terroir-driven character.

On the nose, this Champagne offers enticing aromas of green apple, lemon zest, and white blossoms, with a touch of almond and wet stone. The palate is precise and intense, showcasing flavors of citrus, crisp pear, and a distinct chalky minerality. The Non Dosé (zero dosage) style accentuates its fresh, dry profile, enhancing the wine’s linear structure and leaving a long, mineral-laden finish that resonates with purity.

This Blanc de Blancs pairs beautifully with raw oysters, shellfish, or light seafood dishes, where its freshness and minerality can elevate delicate flavors. The 2017 vintage imparts an elegant balance of concentration and vibrancy, making “Terre de Vertus” an ideal choice for Champagne enthusiasts seeking a transparent, terroir-driven experience that truly reflects the unique soils and climate of Vertus.

The story of the Larmandier-Bernier estate goes back centuries, but things only really got interesting after the late 1980s, when Pierre Larmandier took over. He immediately moved towards sustainable (and eventually, biodynamic) viticulture and indigenous fermentation, putting this estate well ahead of the current set of like-minded grower-producers.

Now Larmandier-Bernier is, according writer Peter Liem, "one of the finest producers in the Côte des Blancs", garnering rave reviews not just from Liem but other top critics like Vinous' Antonio Galloni.

The wines are unified stylistically, with chalky cores and delicate, lifted citrus and floral notes that seem drawn in pastel. But there are also strong differences, a testament to the distinct personalities within the Côtes des Blancs.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
