The Obermosel spent the better part of a century growing grapes for other people's sparkling wine — anonymous, high-acid base wine shipped off to be turned into something wearing a fancier label. Jonas Dostert is one of the growers finally keeping it for himself. Rochus is his traditional-method Cremant, fermented in bottle and finished Brut Nature: zero dosage, no sugar added at disgorgement, nowhere to hide. The Rochusfels' clay-rich soils are the story here — the wine is chalky and taut and driven by acidity rather than fruit, with citrus, orchard fruit and a bready lees note underneath. This is release #23/1, one of Dostert's small numbered lots. Bone dry, high-tension, and nothing like the German sparkling wine you've probably had.

More about Jonas Dostert

Very few growers capture the spirit of the German new wave like Jonas Dostert. From his first vintage in 2018 he has made tiny quantities of electric, profoundly mineral wines in Nittel, in the Obermosel right on the Luxembourg border, where a streak of limestone and dolomite replaces the slate of the classic Mosel. Elbling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir ferment in used Burgundy barrels, a nod to his years in the cellars at Leflaive. Lyrical, terroir-transparent and seriously delicious.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
