The easy-drinking entry into the domaine that invented single-vineyard Chinon — and it drinks like a wine that costs more attention than it asks for. Les Petites Roches comes off gravelly, predominantly clay slopes with limestone underneath, and only free-run juice goes into it (the press wine is sent elsewhere), which is why it's all perfume and gentle tannin rather than grip. It was once the estate's Cuvee Jeunes Vignes, renamed as those vines grew up. 2023 was a fight — mildew pressure through a cool, humid stretch, heavy thinning in the vineyard — but a sunny end of season and a late heat wave delivered real ripeness, and the wine came out concentrated and fresh with unusually ripe tannins. Charles Joguet, the painter and sculptor who took over the family vines in 1957 and decided Cabernet Franc deserved Burgundy's plot-by-plot logic, is long retired; Kevin Fontaine now runs the vineyards and cellars, farming certified organic. Drink this one within about five years of the vintage — that's the domaine's own advice.

Joguet is another jewel in the Kermit Lynch portfolio, the domaine is situated just between the Loire and Vienne Rivers in the AOC of Chinon. Vinified separately, according to parcel since the 1950's, the estate is now run by winemaker Kevin Fontaine and wines are divided into 2 categories: those meant for early consumption, and those meant to age.

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with pan juices, thick-cut pork chops, rabbit in mustard sauce, lentils with sausage, or a mushroom-and-thyme galette. Slightly chilled, it also handles charcuterie and a plate of rillettes.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied and fresh. Floral aromatics over tart red fruit — raspberry, red currant. Tannins are soft and ripe rather than firm, acidity keeps it lively, and the finish is clean with a faint earthy, mocha note as it opens up over a day or two.
