Under seven hectares of vines on the limestone plateau at the western edge of Saint-Émilion, worked as one small block — this is one of the appellation's genuinely tiny top estates, and 2014 is the vintage to catch it in. The plot sits at 45 to 70 meters on clay laced with limestone over a deep limestone bedrock, which is what gives the wine its freshness and its ability to hold shape in warm years; the oldest vines date to 1957. The blend runs about three-quarters Merlot with the balance Cabernet Franc. This bottle comes from the last decade of ownership by the Duffau-Lagarrosse family, who held the property for generations and brought in Nicolas Thienpont and Stéphane Derenoncourt to sharpen the farming and the cellar; the estate changed hands in 2021. 2014 was a cooler, later-ripening year rescued by a beautiful September and October, and it produced Saint-Émilion of real freshness rather than weight — approachable now with a decant, and comfortably good for another decade.

Inky red cherry, blueberry, smoke, leather and tobacco fill out the wine's big frame effortlessly. Layers of intense fruit meld into a huge spine of tannin in a vertical, massively structured Saint-Émilion. So many 2014s are charming and accessible, but this is not one of them. "The 2014 Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) was an intriguing and quite mercurial Saint Emilion when I tasted it from barrel. Now in bottle, it has developed a quite compelling bouquet, very pure with black cherries, iodine, potpourri and crushed violets. The intensity is very impressive. The palate is medium-bodied with almost rigid tannin. This is a masculine wine, perhaps one that has closed down after bottle since it was so expressive from barrel. It is much more linear than I was expecting, even with a touch of hardness on the finish. It is a rather enigmatic Saint Emilion, one tricky to pin down at the moment. Hopefully more flesh will surface with bottle age and just balance out that strict finish. Let's see where this will go. Certainly I would not broach this for a few years." —Neal Martin

"This is full of muscular graphite and tobacco notes, holding sway over a core of slightly exotic mulled fig and warm black currant sauce. A ganache edge lines the finish, but a pure fruit detail echoes longest. This will be exceptional when the elements meld fully. Best from 2022 through 2035."

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck, rib of beef, braised short ribs, or a mushroom and truffle risotto. Also very good with a plate of aged hard cheese.

Tasting Profile

Dark plum and black cherry with smoke, crushed stone, and a little tobacco and sweet earth. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine-grained tannins that have softened and the bright limestone acidity that marks the plateau. Long, savory finish.
