A twenty-five-year-old Saint-Julien from one of the great Bordeaux vintages of its generation — 2000 is the benchmark year against which the neighboring vintages get measured, and this is a Fourth Growth estate that has long delivered more than its classification suggests. The season earned it: an unstable, very wet spring gave way to sun from May onward, blazing dry spells in July and August, and September heat that handed the estate ideal harvest conditions. Branaire-Ducru's own read on the wine was a big one, firm, fully complex, with several decades of keeping ahead of it — a quarter-century on, that's roughly where it should be hitting its stride. The estate sits in the heart of the Médoc between Margaux and Pauillac, its vines spread across some fifteen micro-terroirs on low gravel-and-pebble mounds deposited by the Garonne in the Quaternary, looking out over the Gironde. Mature classified-growth Bordeaux from a vintage like this one rarely comes cheap, which is what makes a Fourth Growth the smart way in.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied and still firm, with dark cassis and plum now joined by the cedar, tobacco and earth that come with age. Plenty of spice and fresh aromatics — the tannins are substantial but resolving, acidity keeps it lively, and the finish is long and savory. Decant it.
